An earthquake in 1348 levelled Aquileia's basilica, but work began on its successor shortly after, concealing its greatest treasure treasure. The floor has since been peeled back to reveal fourth-century Roman mosaics, a rare memoir of the earliest days of Christianity. Visitors walk above on transparent bridges. Equally as important are the contents of the church's crypts � one houses ninth-century frescoes, the other, first-century mosaics.
