Just outside of Trieste is the Castello Miramare, one of Friuli-Venezia Giuli's greatest attractions. Gleaming white, turreted, and sitting on the shores of the sparkling Adriatic, this is a truly a storybook castle. The grounds, which had no vegetation at all when the castle was built between 1856 and 1860, are now planted with a number of tropical and indigenous plants. The rooms are full of their original furnishings, with highlights being Maximilian's chambers and Duke Amadeo of Aosta's apartment.
